Know the Numbers

  • In Illinois during the school year 2018-2019, tooth decay rates were as follows:

    • Non-Hispanic White: 36.8%
    • Non-Hispanic Black: 40.2%
    • Hispanic/Latino: 52.2%
  • Meanwhile, rates of untreated decay were as follows:

    • Non-Hispanic White: 18.8%
    • Non-Hispanic Black: 26.7%
    • Hispanic/Latino: 22.3%
  • Among children aged 6 to 8, over 50% have experienced cavities in their primary (baby) teeth.

  • Over 50% of adolescents aged 12 to 19 have had cavities in their permanent teeth.
  • Children aged 5 to 19 from low-income families are twice as likely, with a 25% prevalence, to have cavities compared to children from higher-income households, where the prevalence is 11%.
  • Only about one in five children enrolled in Medicaid received a single dental visit in a year.
  • For every child without medical coverage, there are 2.6 children without dental coverage.
  • Four out of five low-income children never see a dentist in a year, and 85% of all decay in children occurs in this group.

In so knowing, we have established our causes and built a congregation of board-certified dentists, hygienists, assistants, and staff to strive to turn the tables and make change happen to thousands of our little citizens in an unattended bout with dental and oral diseases.

FAQ

At The Heart That Smiles Mobile Dentists, Inc., we can transform a classroom or any designated area within a school or facility into a fully functional “dental office” for a day. Our team brings all the necessary equipment, including compressors, chairs, sterilizers, high and low-volume suction, air-water syringe, and focused lights. We ensure the highest hygiene and safety standards by utilizing new or disposable supplies for each patient. Additionally, we provide a referral network for patients and their families in case they require further dental treatment.

Is there a charge for our services?
No.
How many people actually come to the location?
It depends on the number of students we will be seeing. For smaller schools, we will typically have a dentist, a hygienist or assistant, and a site manager. For larger schools, we may have additional hygienists or assistants with us.
How long will the students be away from the classroom to have treatment?
The average time is 15–20 minutes. Our team does everything possible to ensure the visit is as timely as possible. But the time really depends on the number of services the student needs and the age of the student. Also, each student is given an individualized oral hygiene lesson based on age and exam findings. So there is a lot to get done. But our team pays careful attention to timing.
What happens if a child requires follow-up work?
We have partnered with several dental facilities that have agreed to take all our children for follow-up and emergency care. If the child has no dental home, we love to do everything possible to ensure that our children are able to receive the care they need. We call every parent individually who needs follow-up care and let them know where to go for treatment. And if transportation is an issue, even transportation can be arranged.
What do we need to prepare for the THTS visit?

We only ask for two things:

  1. That you hand out the consent forms to the children and/or parents and collect them back.
  2. Designate a space for us where we can set up our “dental office” with electrical outlets and is not far from running water and a bathroom.
